Bella leads Dante into the barn, clipping him to a set of cross ties in front of Spots. Ash is already saddling his pony, who still sports brown dirt stains along her hindquarters.

“Aren’t you going to groom her first?” I ask.

Ash tugs on the girth without answering.

“She’s a mess, Ash! You haven’t brushed her in weeks.” I stride over to Spots and pick up a dandy brush.

He pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “Why don’t you mind your own business?”

“She’s your pony, and she needs you.” I flick the brush over Spots’ rump, raising a cloud of dust. “Just because your parents are divorcing doesn’t mean your life is over. You’ve still got Spots.”

“Not for long,” he mutters under his breath.

Bella steps away from Dante. “Your parents are getting divorced? And you’re selling Spots?”

Ash snatches Spots’ bridle from a hook on the stall door beside the cross ties.

“He found out his parents are divorcing just before he left for camp,” I explain. “And now he might not have enough money to keep Spots.”

“I’m sorry, Ashton,” Bella says. “That’s—”

“Shut up!” Ash’s normally pale face blazes red. “Just leave me alone and mind your own business.” When he flings the bridle to the floor, Spots barely flinches, but Dante snorts and pulls back on the cross ties.

Bella rushes to the Hanoverian’s side to steady him. “Whoa. Easy.” The whites of Dante’s eyes flash as he strains against her grip on his halter. “You’re all right.”

He fidgets another few moments before deciding Ash won’t hurl something at his head.

“See what you did?” I turn back to glare at him, but he’s no longer there. “Ash?”
